You Don’t Have Too Much Stuff

Apr 1, 2019 1:14:42 PM / by Cook Portable Warehouses

Clutter and Storage We live in an age where you hear the message of declutter and downsize constantly. And nothing is inherently wrong with that. But, for many of us, it can quickly become discouraging as you glance around your home and feel like there is too much stuff and no time to do a deep purge.

So, first, let’s stop the shaming.

It’s possible you could throw a few things away. You may have great potential for holding a very successful yard sale tomorrow. But, maybe it’s time to look at it differently. The problem may not lie in your amount of stuff, but in your limited amount of space. That’s a very different way of looking at the problem isn’t it?

Going through a box of memories

Saying you have too much stuff could mean you’re convincing yourself that you have too many memories. What a ridiculous thing to say! Good memories and experiences shouldn’t be taken for granted. Some of your items may seem meaningless to someone else, but if they hold positive memories you want to keep, you don’t necessarily have to part with them.

Making Pottery, having a favorite hobby

Saying you have too much stuff could mean you’re shaming yourself for having too many hobbies. First off, to find even one hobby you enjoy and want to continue perfecting is a great feat! Do you really want to deprive yourself of the joy you get from building your model train collection, your wood carvings or your sewing creations? No! You enjoy them and your joy spills into other people’s lives too. Don’t let the voice that says “I don’t have space for this,” keep you from doing what brings you a sense of satisfaction and meaning.

Mom and daughter

Saying you have too much stuff could mean you’re dismissing your love for others. Maybe your mom is getting on in years and she just needs a little help so she moved in with you and your family. Or, maybe your kids finished college and are now back home paying off school debt while they work on launching their career. You’ve added stuff to your home and your life, and yes, it can be very frustrating at times as you meld your lives back together under one roof. But, you (nor they) have too much stuff, you just may not have enough space for what’s important to both of you.

Today, take a few minutes to examine what’s in your home. Do you really have too much? Or is there just not enough space for what you need and want to keep?

Maybe you answered yes to the first question. If that’s the case, we challenge you to take a Saturday and tackle at least one room to see how much you can declutter. This article will help with that!

But, we would venture most of you just need more room. We realize there’s more to your stuff, it’s a part of your story, your life. It’s your choice whether those things stay or go.

Either way, what if the best solution for you today is simply to increase your space? A garage, a shed, a new home, a home renovation or add-on. These are solutions that can help you discover the space you need for what matters to you. Not what matters to your neighbor, your friends or your extended family, but what those under your roof call important.

If this is you, consider some of our shed styles. They’re affordable, especially with the rent to own options. The best part is, it will give you the space you need to love others and enjoy life a little more.
