Change is essential. Sometimes, clearing out a closet or rearranging the living room furniture is enough to make a difference in our lives, giving us that little boost we need. Other times, we have to step back and reevaluate our lives on a larger scale.

Have you been wanting to learn a new language, lose weight, or remodel your home? Setting SMART goals can help you achieve these and other items on your to-do list.

  • Specific

Goals that are too broad or vague just won’t work. Be specific in your purpose and in your approach toward reaching that objective. For example, let’s say you want to make a little extra cash. Create a plan to have a yard sale by cleaning out your attic, basement, closets, etc.

  • Measurable

Setting a deadline will add motivation to this plan by giving you something to work toward. When do you want to have this yard sale? You could say sometime in the spring, but continuing to be specific is even better. Therefore, let’s say you’re going to have a yard sale during the first weekend in April.

  • Attainable

Now that you have a definite end date, decide which actions will help you get there. Your home is full of things that you no longer need, but letting go isn’t always that easy.

Check out this blog post for help on determining which items to keep and which ones to sell. If your goal is to make money, it’s also important that you’re getting the most for your stuff. Do a bit of research (perhaps, on eBay.com or other online selling sites) to see how much people are charging for similar items.

  • Realistic

Goals mean nothing unless they can be realistically achieved. If you typically have to work on the weekends, planning a weekend yard sale isn’t very wise. “Well, maybe I can get someone to take over my shift this one time.”  It probably isn’t worth the risk.  Setting goals that are impractical often means setting yourself up for failure. Simply, plan the sale on a day that you know you’ll be available.

  • Timely

Time plays a huge role in setting reasonable goals. If you give yourself too little time to complete the goal, you may get overwhelmed and give up entirely. On the other hand, allowing too much time can make room for distractions that will derail your motivation. With the yard sale scenario, think of how long it will take to gather up the sale items, research item values, price pieces accordingly, and set up for the big day. Then, give yourself that much time – no more, no less.
