MayMay brings one of the biggest sale days of the year with Memorial Day, but the good deals aren’t just reserved for the end of the month. There are plenty of smart investments to make in May that can freshen up your wardrobe, home or furniture.

And here are this month’s great and not-so-great deals:

Spring clothing and accessories

Usually we wouldn’t recommend purchasing clothing until the season is over to capitalize on the best sales, but with Memorial Day, May is the exception.

You can get great deals on springtime apparel and accessories nearly the entire month up until the holiday. May is the absolute best month to purchase sportswear and swimsuits with many stores looking to get rid of excess inventory.

The discounts will continue to increase leading up to Memorial Day, so keep your eyes peeled for the best deals. You should also be able to find discounts on most spring-themed home goods and decor.

Appliances and equipment

Along with clothing, the most popular sale items are home appliances, kitchen supplies, and cookware. If you need to replace an outdated or malfunctioning kitchen appliance like a dishwasher or microwave, now is the time to make that purchase.

The prices will also be reduced on small appliances like vacuum cleaners. So, make note of those things that are on their last leg and shop around for the best prices.

Home furniture

Springtime is often the season when stores are looking to clear out their inventory of living and dining sets to make space for new lines. This coupled with the Memorial Day sales, make for unbeatable deals. May is the best time to redo your office with great deals on desks and chairs, as everyone is focused on their outdoor set up.

May is also the best time to replace your old mattress with big discounts. If you are open to a different style of mattress, you can find deals up to 50 percent off retail cost.

With all the great deals out there in May, there are two big items that we would recommend avoiding.

If you’re in the market for a new laptop, try to wait until after the end of June to take advantage of back to school deals and no sales tax days on school supplies and equipment.

Although May is officially the beginning of BBQ season, it’s not the month to buy a new grill. Because demand is at its peak, prices for gas grills are sky high. Try to get through this summer and replace your old grill during the Labor Day sales.
