Winter brings a great opportunity to clean, organize and declutter your home because you are spending so much time inside hiding out from the frigid weather. Make the most of this time by thinking about what you currently own and how you can utilize your current resources in the best way possible!

One great way to save money this winter is making your home more energy efficient. Check out these 5 ways to do that in our last blog post!

And here are 5 out-of-the-box ideas and tricks to get the most bang for your buck around your home this winter! All that savings could be put toward adding value back to your home with a Cook Portable building right in your backyard.

Replace cleaning products with baking soda

Everyone has a least a box or two of baking soda around their home, in the refrigerator or under the sink, so why not put it to good use! You can make simple cleaning solutions by adding baking soda to other basic ingredients.

For example, a mixture of half a cup of baking soda and vinegar becomes a drain cleaner. Or dilute baking soda with water and use to gently to exfoliate your skin and teeth.

Organize the refrigerator and freezer

Take some time and look into the organizational structure of your fridge. If you end up throwing away perishable fruits and veggies because they are hidden in the back of a drawer, then try moving things around.  Earmark a shelf for your perishable items or keep them in front of your fridge and check expiration dates regularly.

Another way to reduce food waste is to use your freezer whenever possible. Be smart when you’re cooking meals. For example, cook at extra batch and freeze it for a future meal.  Also some items when stored in the freezer last much longer, such as bananas, ginger and lemons.

Plant a winter garden

Take advantage of herbs and vegetables that grow well during the winter and use them in some delicious and hearty meals. Use those veggies in easy to do Crockpot dinners. Just throw all the ingredients into the pot in the morning and let it simmer all day. The meals are inexpensive with veggies, broths and cheaper cuts of meat and are still tasty!

Or plant a small herb garden, inside or outside, so your family can have access to garnishes like basil, dill and mint that will jazz up your meals without costing you a fortune.

Use dental floss on everything

Dental floss is another one of those inexpensive household staples that nearly everyone has.  You can use dental floss to sew on buttons, hang light items on the wall and replace broken shoelaces or fishing line. Think about dental floss as string and there are countless things you can do with it, past ensuring you have sparking, white teeth!

Take advantage of what you have

With all that free time you have at home, go through your cabinets, closets and more! You will more than likely find things you forgot you had! You can save money every year by just not buying duplicates of existing things.

Go through your pantry and take out all those canned goods and non-perishable items. Then, try to plan meals (or use a meal planning website) with the things you already have on hand.
