One of the best parts of Spring is watching your garden bloom with colorful flowers, healthy vegetables and fragrant herbs. Gardening is a great way to relive stress, get exercise and enjoy the outdoors.

Whether you’re a beginner, planting for the first time, or a seasoned gardener, it’s important to start early on in Spring to ensure success.

Gardening requires a high level of patience and attention to detail, resulting in a rewarding, fulfilling work when you see those first few sprouts or buds.

Here are 5 tips to help you get started with those early Spring gardening tasks! And if you’re looking for more on Spring garden preparations, read this post!

Prepare your soil

Getting your soil ready for your spring garden should be done as early as possible. But remember not to till the soil when it’s too wet, which will impede plant growth. So, wait until those April storms roll out of your area.

Then, till the area 8-12 inches below the surface and remove any rocks or debris. Finally, add fertilizer and other organic matter.

Weed your yard

Weeds are no fun to deal with, especially after a Winter of letting them grow. Spread your weeding tasks out over several weeks so you won’t burn out quickly from such boring work!

Move plants back outside

Move those plants, herbs and shrubs that stayed inside during the Winter back into the soil. A great tip is to add coffee grounds to your compost pile or soil, which are filled with nitrogen to aid growth.

Use what you have

Leftovers and food items you have around your home can be utilized in your garden to help stimulate early growth. Once it cools down to room temperature, use the water you cooked vegetables or starches in to water your garden. That water has vitamins and minerals leftover that will benefit planting.

Or, water your plants with chamomile tea several times per week to help protect them from bacterial and fungal infections. Also, adding ground-up egg shells when planting vegetables helps them to avoid getting blossom end rot caused by calcium deficiencies.

Garden at night

Don’t just think of gardening as a daytime activity anymore! Planting at night and the light of the moon can help your garden grow faster. It also keeps the gardener out of the hot temperatures and helps to maximize water usage. Remember to consider proper lighting when gardening at night.
